Local Efforts

The Humane Society of Skagit Valley and a group of concerned citizens spearheaded a local campaign to bring public awareness to the tragedies of puppy mills, the overpopulation dilemma, and the lack of regulations in Skagit County to prevent them. As a result of this public awareness campaign, Skagit County currently has a full moratorium on any new kennel permit applications until new kennel regulations are developed.

What Can You Do?

»Let everyone know the horrible truth behind that cute little puppy for sale in a pet shop window... How the mother has suffered to bring you that pup.

»Please continue to volunteer for cleaning and care of all of the animals at the shelter. We need your ongoing help.

»If you are good at writing, send a letter every month to the Editor, TV stations, and whoever else offers this service. Be persistent.

»Explain to anyone that wants to purchase a small designer dog from a breeder or pet shop that there is a high possibility that the puppies mother has had to endure a life of hardship; kept in a small filthy confined cage, debarked so know one can hear her suffering, for years on end. The mother suffers so the puppy can be purchased for an enormous fee. Please do not support the puppy mill trade. Visit your local shelter and rescue an unwanted mix breed instead.

Lets never forgot these dogs who are locked away in little cages

and will never KNOW LOVE.
