Right now in Skagit county we have 4 or more large operating puppy mills that each hold up to 200 dogs in their kennels. These are the ones we know of.
As we speak, the owner of a puppy mill with 150 small dogs has applied for a special use permit from the Skagit County Planning Department. This permit would allow them to legally continue their breeding kennel that has been in operation for several years without a permit.
We oppose the approval of this permit.
The small dogs live their lives in pens forced to reproduce at a cost to their health and mental well being. They never have a home or feel love. Eventually when they are worn out they may be disposed of.
Yet another Skagit County breeding kennel is in the process of applying for a special use permit. In that kennel the dogs complacently fulfill their duty to reproduce while forced to live in kennels filled with mud.
Distressed neighbors report another puppy mill where the Purebred dogs are kept in pens and the birthing area for the puppies is the back seat of a car.
Skagit County already faces pet overpopulation problems, with our shelter and local rescues overflowing with animals. Why allow more senseless breeding?
Unfortunately the commercial breeding kennel regulations in Skagit County are in need of updating and provide no relief for these horrible situations. Other surrounding counties have regulations to prevent and control these type of operations.
Don’t let Skagit County become the drop zone for puppy mills that have been outlawed in its neighboring counties! |
